“The Asian American Resource Center (AARC) invites the public to celebrate its two-year anniversary as well as the Grand Opening of “I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story,” a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution featuring special guest speaker Konrad Ng, Director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center.A day full of activities is planned for Saturday, Oct. 3 at the AARC including opening keynote address and special remarks, viewing the exhibit and its accompanying e-book and audio self-guided tour app, interactive oral histories, preservation workshop, Asian American history learning lab, Asian American video stories in an auditorium-style setting, crafts for kids, two-year anniversary cake and light refreshments.In the first exhibition of its kind from the Smithsonian, “I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story” celebrates Asian Pacific American history across a multitude of diverse cultures and explores how Asian Pacific Americans have shaped and been shaped by the course of our nation’s history. Rich with compelling stories and images, the exhibition takes a sweeping look at this history, from the very first Asian immigrants centuries ago to the complex challenges facing Asian Pacific American communities today.’I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story’ was created by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibition is supported by a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.”
