Would you like to learn more about how archaeologists work with pottery, excavate burials, and find sites through satellite images? Participate in the annual celebration of International Archaeology Day with events and activities for the general public organized by The Mesoamerica Center in the Department of Art and Art History and the Anthropology Department Graduate Student Organization. Events are designed for children (K6), teenagers (K6-12), and adults.All activities are free, but require registration as we have a limited number of spaces! Click this link to register!

Select from the activities below:

Children – Paint Your Own Maya Plate. Children will learn about Maya pottery and glyphs and draw designs on Maya paper plates to take home. All materials provided. Meets in DFA 4.104.
Two 45-minute sessions: choose either 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm.

Teens – Experience Archaeology: From the Field to the Lab. Middle and high school students will help interpret the excavation of a burial, bag and tag materials for the lab, take artifact photographs, set up the microscope for analysis, and find sites through satellite images. Don’t forget to bring your phone for a selfie with your friends at a famous archaeological site! Meets in DFA4.110, 2:00-3:30 pm.

Adults – South American Pottery from the UT Art and Art History Collection. Curious to see the only ancient American pottery in a public collection in Austin? Learn about the UT Art and Art History Collection, and experience the work of archaeologicalceramicists and museum curators. See pots from almost 2000 years ago, learn how ancient pottery was made, and help sort ceramic sherds. Open to interested adults, schoolteachers, and college students. Fine Arts Library 3rd Floor, 3:00-4:30 pm
